Walker, Foster-Hylton, Ennis-London advance to finals

Usain Bolt the world fastest man
BEIJING –Melaine Walker, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Delloreen Ennis-London advanced to medal rounds while Olympic champion Usain Bolt and Christopher Williams moved a step closer towards 200m glory as action continued at the games of the 29th Olympiad.

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Walker behind two comfortable runs so far, booked her place in the medal round with 54.20 seconds to win her semi-final heat yesterday.

Ukrainian Anastasiya Rabchenyuk was pulled to a personal best 54.60 by Walker, who said only she can beat herself in the final. Asked who is her danger for the final, Walker, the world leader at 53.48 replied: “I don’t even want to talk about that, I don’t really care,” she said.

“I just want to go out there and run the way I ran in the rounds,” added walker, who targets the world record of 52.34, held by Russian Yuliya Pechonkina.

In the women’s sprint hurdles, Ennis-London (12.67) and Foster-Hylton (12.76) will contest Tuesday’s final.

Vonette Dixon, (12.87 for fourth), was thrown of by Swedish Susanna Kallur, who fell in the lane next to her.

Meanwhile, Bolt’s second round 200-metre victory, which came in 20.29 seconds, set him up for the sprint double.

American Shawn Crawford was second to Bolt in 20.42 while Kim Collins of St. Kitts was third in 20.34.

In heat two, Williams, the 2003 World Championships finished third in 20.28 seconds. Zimbabwean Brian Dzingai won the heat in 20.23 ahead of American Walker Dix (20.27).

The men’s 20m final is on Wednesday.

In the men’s 400m, while Ricardo Chambers advanced to the second round, national champion Michael Blackwood (45.56) and Sanya Ayre (45.66) fell by the wayside.

Chambers (45.22) finished third in heat four behind Great Britain’s Martyn Rooney (45.00) and Sean Wroe of Australia (45.17 PB).

Richard Phillips and Maurice Wignall also made headways, but in the men’s 110m hurdles. Phillips (13.6) and Wignall (13.61 SB) for fourth in heats one and four respectively, are into the quarterfinals.
