Death toll of collapse school in Haiti rises
The number of people, who died in the collapse of a school in Haiti on Friday, has risen to at least 88.
Rescuers have been working around the clock to find survivors in the remains of the three-storey La Promesse College in a suburb of Port-au-Prince.
About 500 children and teachers were in the building when it collapsed.
President Rene Preval who visited the scene of the tragedy said rescue crews dropped water and biscuits through holes in the rubble to a group of children and focused their efforts on reaching them.
It’s believed that poor construction methods, including a failure to use reinforced steel, led to the collapse of the school building.
Engineers from the UN mission in Haiti, and members of the Haitian Red Cross have been helping the local teams remove heavy pieces of concrete.
The owner of the school has since been arrested.
