Authorities in Suriname have condemned a quantity of milk powder recently imported from China, after it was proven to contain the toxic industrial chemical melamine.

Samples of the tainted milk, seized on Monday, were sent to the Netherlands for testing and the results were positive.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries said the milk has been deemed unfit for human consumption and would be destroyed.
