Hurricane Gustav barreled toward vulnerable Haiti on Tuesday and appeared set to become a “major” storm later in the week as it neared the Gulf of Mexico where the United States produces a large amount of oil and gas.
The 7th storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season had top sustained winds of 85 miles per hour (140 km per hour) by 5 a.m. EDT, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of storm intensity, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

(BEIJING, August 22) — Jamaica confirmed their new-found status as the greatest sprinting nation in the world, smashing the world record to win gold in the Men’s 4 x 100m Relay at the National Stadium on Friday, August 22.
Their victory was never in question, as anchor Asafa Powell crossed the finish line in 37.10 seconds, slicing three tenths of a second off the 15-year-old world record previously held by the United States.

(BEIJING, August 22) — Russia took the Women’s 4×100m Relay gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a time of 42.31 seconds.
The coveted gold medals will be worn by Evgeniya Polyakova, Aleksandra Fedoriva, Yulia Gushchina and Yuliya Chermoshanskaya.
The Athens 2004 silver medal team was comprised of Olga Fyodorova, Irina Khabarova, Larisa Kruglova and Yuliya Tabakova.

(BEIJING, August 21) - Defending Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica won gold in the Women’s 200m in a time of 21.74 seconds at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Athens 2004 silver medalist Allyson Felix of the United States claimed silver, while Kerron Stewart of Jamaica took bronze.

(BEIJING, August 20) — Melanie Walker of Jamaica set an Olympic record to win the Women’s 400m Hurdles, emerging victorious over pre-race favorite and rival Sheena Tosta of the United States at the National Stadium on Wednesday, August 20.
Walker, in her Olympic debut, crossed the line in 52.64 seconds to prove that it is not only the Jamaican men who can set Athletics records.

(BEIJING, August 20) — Jamaican Usain Bolt set a new world record of 19.30 seconds in the Men’s 200m final to take the gold medal in this event on August 20 at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
Bolt became the first man to win the 100 and 200 in the same Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984.

BEIJING –Melaine Walker, Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Delloreen Ennis-London advanced to medal rounds while Olympic champion Usain Bolt and Christopher Williams moved a step closer towards 200m glory as action continued at the games of the 29th Olympiad.
In the women’s 400m hurdles, Walker behind two comfortable runs so far, booked her place in the medal round with 54.20 seconds to win her semi-final heat yesterday.

Antigua and Barbuda police Monday charged a man and a teenager with the murder of Benjamin and Catherine Mullany, the British couple who were killed while on honeymoon.
Police say the men, whose names have not been disclosed, were among eight persons held for questioning last week.
