KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The men’s 100-metre final at this weekend’s Jamaica National Athletics Championships is set to draw the attention of the track & field world. Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man at 9.72 seconds, and Asafa Powell, the former world 100-metre record holder at 9.74 seconds, will battle for the right to be called national 100 metres champion. Both sprinters have seven of the fastest times ever produced in the history of the event, Bolt (9.72, 9.76) and Powell (9.74, 9.77 three times and 9.78).

One of the most eagerly anticipated sprint showdowns in local track and field history takes place this weekend, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
The men’s 100-metre dash is the blue riband event at the SAGICOR National Open Track and Field Championships, and local star Darrel Brown is the reigning champion.
Richard Thompson, Marc Burns and Aaron Armstrong are all gunning for Brown’s crown.
The SAGICOR century will have added flavour in 2008 with the inclusion of Brown’s UTech/MVP Track Club training partner Asafa Powell, the second fastest human being in history.

A Jamaican national, who United States authorities said committed one of the most heinous crimes in recent history, has been captured by authorities in his home country. The US Marshals Department of Justice website revealed that David James Clarke, 26, who was in April added to their ‘15 Most Wanted Fugitive’ list for his alleged participation in the June 2007 murders of a young South Florida couple, was held on Wednesday. He is being kept at a high-security facility in Kingston until his extradition to face first-degree murder charges.

NEW YORK, CMC – Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer says the Second Annual Conference on the Caribbean will open up doors for further dialogue and concrete initiatives, spurring regional economic growth. In delivering the keynote address Thursday at the launch of ‘The New York Conference on the Caribbean Community: A 20/20 Vision Continued’, the Antiguan leader said “the moment is opportune” for the region to engage in this “interface with existing and prospective investment and trade partners”.

THE WEST Indies and Australia will usher in the first Twenty20 International in the Caribbean when they meet at the Kensington Oval today.
After the three-match Test series, the two teams will play a one-off match in the shortest form of the game ahead of their five-match one-day international series, which starts on Tuesday. Although losing the Test series 2-0, the West Indies challenged Australia all the way and coach John Dyson is hoping to build on that performance in the shorter matches.

A hand grenade and 100 rounds of 9 mm ammunition were found in a house after police placed several parts of Sea Lots, Port of Spain in lock-down mode yesterday. Officers of the Criminal Investigations Department randomly raided the homes of several residents. The raids which began at 10 a.m. was led by Snr Supt Martin Murrain .

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):
Prolific West Indies batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, is targeting another three years in international cricket. The 33-year-old joined illustrious company by becoming the fourth West Indian batsman to reach 8,000 runs in Test cricket on the fifth and final day of the third Digicel Test against Australia at Kensington Oval on Monday.
“I don’t know where I am going to go, but hopefully I can play another three years of international cricket if things go well,” Chanderpaul told reporters.
“You have to perform. That is the only way you are going to be up there. If I play another three years of international cricket, I’d be happy.”
